Tyler Gedman

Duquesne, PA

About Tyler Gedman:

At its core, Gedman’s work seeks to reveal the unconventional beauty of ordinary life, often illuminated by dramatic light and shadow. He works primarily in the plein air tradition, painting directly from the natural world rather than from photographic references. This approach allows him to capture an unmistakable sense of truth and immediacy that would otherwise be impossible, while engaging in a process he finds as rewarding as the finished work itself.

His paintings are deeply rooted in Pennsylvania’s Mon Valley, where he was born and raised. Rather than treating the region merely as a symbol of industry or decline, Gedman is drawn to the quieter ways its history continues to shape everyday life. Mills, hillside houses, narrow streets, churches, and aging commercial buildings exist alongside one another, carrying the evidence of generations whose lives and labor helped build the region. His work observes how these places persist and remain inhabited—how the mill still hums in the distance while ordinary life continues around it.

Although Gedman’s life also includes teaching, social engagement, and the responsibilities of daily living, it is in solitude with his paints and easel that he feels most fully himself. His happiest moments are spent painting and watching an image gradually emerge through his own hand. It is within those moments that he feels most present, most honest, and most complete.
