About Ryan Bartley:
Ryan Bartley believes that we live in an infinitely complex world, existing at the intersection of many influences, forces and desires. From the microscopic activities inside our own bodies to the geopolitical workings of the world at large, these intersections are often defined by conflict.
These paintings seek to address the brutality and senselessness that often results from this conflict. Through his use of a figurative language from childhood sources such as comics, cartoons and video games, each painting depicts a portion of a fable-like or mythological narrative. In his work, violence, suffering and destruction are all present and unmasked, but become somewhat transformed by their context.
Despite this brutal subject matter, Ryan's oil paintings are often vibrant, evocative and elegant, with saturated colors and delicate, intricate figures.
