About Paula Menchen:
Memory, textures and surfaces play an important role in Paula’s palette and expression.Deconstructing and reconstructing the pictorial space has become part of her research and process. Sanding, cutting, burning, smoothing and grinding surfaces that become impressions, footprints and traces. Rearranging fragments, she is able to form tactile landscapes and complex surfaces provoking the artist drive to connect with the viewer.
Born in East London, Paula immigrated to the US at the early age of 2, growing up in Los Angeles. She earned her BFA from Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design in Los Angeles and studied at Parsons in New York.
Paula’s work can be found in collections in America, England, Belgium, Spain and Portugal and has also been exhibited in Japan, Holland and Italy.
Immigrating for a second time to the USA in 2022 causing her to question home, belonging; what is familiar and what is foreign, preservation and destruction.
