About Paul Gurney:
Paul Gurney is a studio and ‘en plein-air’ artist, working with oils, watercolours, gouache or pen and ink depending on the subject he prefers to paint. Paul loves painting ‘en plein-air’ of views he has been inspired by on the spot, while on walks or he has been inspired to return to. Creating 'live', then finishing the paintings in the studio is often his preferred method.
Paul loves to draw and paint observationally en-plein-air. For Paul, being on-the-spot and in the 'light' and not creating through a camera lens are important in the initial composition of all his work. Every view or object can be a possible subject to be captured in his accurate, natural and impressionistic style. Paul loves “the beautiful everyday”!
The subtle and varied colours made in outdoor light; the moods in weather conditions on landscapes; unexpected colour combinations are potential inspirational subjects Paul loves to capture.
Previously, Paul has worked as a Art Director and Creative Director in Advertising Agencies in London with spells as an illustrator for children’s books. Paul has been self employed with his own Graphic Design Business to-date. Paul has drawn and painted all his life selling his work to collectors in the USA, Japan and the UK.
Influenced by painters like Edward Hopper, Sir Alfred Munnings and Jaoquin Sorolla with their inspirational use of colour, space and composition. Paul is inspired to create art that draws viewers back fagain and again.
With a life long love of all things visual, Paul has been a creative practitioner all his life developing a passion for drawing and painting from very early on. Paul has won and been commended in competions over his life which has been the catalyst for driving his creative practice.
