About Leanne Staples:

Leanne Staples (b.1954) is a photographer and writer living in New York City.

Self-taught in photography and using a camera since the late 1960’s, Leanne studied English Literature and Audio Visual Communications. Until recently she had considered her photography and writing to be two separate art forms, however she now realizes that she creates images using both mediums, and that they are complementary.

Leanne’s process has always embraced chance and an exploration of the unknown, and this is how she stumbled upon and developed her style of photography that she calls, lens-based art. These works are very much influenced by the paintings of Gerhard Richter and photographs of Saul Leiter. It’s a style that blurs the lines between the two mediums.

Technique is less important than having a willingness to take a chance in Leanne’s work, be it photography or writing. Embracing chance leads to happy accidents. Happy accidents lead to repetition. Repetition leads to style. Style leads to boredom. Boredom leads to experimentation. Deemphasizing the rigid confines of the medium is a must.
