About Ilgvars Zalans:

Ilgvars Zalāns is a Latvian visual artist whose practice centers on abstract and action painting. Working primarily with acrylic and spray paint on canvas, he explores gesture, rhythm, memory, and the relationship between movement and space. His paintings combine layered color fields, graphic structures, drips, and partially erased marks, balancing physical energy with atmospheric stillness. Zalāns has exhibited internationally, including at SCOPE Art Miami Beach, SCOPE Art Basel, the Gangwon Triennale, and the Mark Rothko Museum. His extensive work and residencies across Japan and Asia have shaped his sensitivity to architecture, landscape, and cultural memory. His works are held in public and private collections, including the Mark Rothko Museum and the Benetton Art Collection. He lives and works in Riga, Latvia, and is available for original acquisitions and site-responsive commissions.
